HORLICKS

Vanilla, toffee, elaichi, chocolate and more, India is a key market for Horlicks!

GlaxoSmithHORLICKSKline is promoting Horlicks in India in a very aggressive manner. Proof: Last year consumers voted it at Rank 83, this year it has jumped up 26 notches to sit happily at Rank 57. Though many may argue that this may be due to its rivals losing visibility, the fact remains that here is one brand that has made a lot of progress in the last year. Says Zubair Ahmed, MD-GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare: “In 2007, our single minded focus will be on profitable top line growth. We expect such growth to be fuelled by our brands Horlicks and Boost, behind which we will continue to invest aggressively.” Another reason that can be attributed to the success of Horlicks is the tie up with the movie ‘Superman Returns’. Earlier, the brand had also teamed up with ‘Ice Age 2’ to promote the drink, instantly heightening the brand recall among kids. More recently, Horlicks also teamed up with the Hollywood blockbuster Spider-Man 3 in India to charm even more young adults into its growing breed of brand loyalists. Over 2 billion cups of Horlicks are drunk every year in India and going by the current market wave, seems the drink will be way ahead of its rivals for a long long time to come.

FORD

This one’s an I(K)onclastic brand. So, have you gone fida over this Detroit biggie yet?

It mayA global brand image, great campaigns & AB junior’s magic... be a world renowned brand, but it took the company a little while to arrive in India and even more time to make a mark. But Ford finally got it with the Ikon and Fiesta. Great launches, well thought out campaigns and AB junior have helped Ford climb up the brand ladder in the past year. With Ikon - the josh machine - a global brand was given an Indian feel for the first time, and the moment redefined auto marketing in India. After the initial stint, Ikon started losing charm but the subsequent entry of Fiesta into the Indian market changed Ford’s fortunes in India forever. Ford was again back in the limelight and this time with a greater bang. ‘Go Fida’ was what every Indian tuned into and the twin concepts of Diet Diesel and powerful performance, made Fiesta a runaway success. Being one of the oldest car manufacturers in the world, the Detroit biggie has immense clout, which the brand was able to leverage swiftly in the Indian market. Having lost its global supremacy to GM more than 75 years ago, Ford is highly keen on the Indian auto market. Delivering great performance has been Ford’s focus here, and that has indeed become their brand identity as well.

MAGGI

IIPM - Admission Procedure

We’ve grown up on the ubiquitous Maggi, but will the brand survive the ‘health’ onslaught?

“Just 2 minutes...” Of course,And Maggi goes in for a healthy makeover... will it succeed? you’d never be able to forget something as tasty as this 2-minute treat! And it all started with Maggi Noodles! When someone asked your preference for noodles, pat came the answer – “I love it”, or “I don’t like it”! That’s the kind of power that this 2-minute punch, called Maggi, began to command. And NestlĂ© was shrewd enough to leverage the prowess of the brand name; it extended it to soups as well, which are selling well in the Indian market. But, where, as on one hand, Maggi may be a market leader, competition is coming in fast and furious from the likes of ‘Wai Wai’. No wonder Maggi has slumped 5 places to a lowly 33rd position. There’s a bigger reason for the fall and that is its unsatisfactory performance during the past year with extensions like atta noodles and Maggi Rice Noodles with three variants. These are efforts by Maggi to affix the health tag to its already tasty image, but the consumer still has to develop a taste for the new variants.

Naresh Gupta, National Head, Strategic Planning Department, Grey Worldwide, points out: “In today’s world, when everybody is becoming health-conscious, a brand can’t survive if it is not considered to be healthy...” How soon will Maggi’s image be overhauled is the question that the brand gurus are still waiting to answer?

Nokia has lost some of its sheen. Maybe a celeb ambassador would serve it well...

WhenNokia Ad Francisco Tárrega, one of the renowned guitarists of the 19th century, composed ‘Gran Vals’, little did he know that one day his tune would become one of the most heard ringtones across the orb, known popularly as the ‘Nokia Tune’. In the mobile handset market, which has stalwarts like Sony Ericsson, Samsung and Motorola doing their numbers, Nokia has globally maintained a lead. And there was a time when acknowledging its invincibility was not very difficult as this Finnish giant led by a huge margin. Nokia made its debut in the Indian market 12 seasons ago, and its success mantra lay in the diversified offerings catering to almost all sections of the society, packed with continuous innovation and a communication strategy that literally talked to its audience. Nokia gave to India one of its most popular taglines – Connecting People. Talking about Nokia’s ad strategy, Rajeev Raja, Executive Creative Director of Bates Asia (Nokia’s ad agency) says, “The emphasis has always been on recognising and connecting with Indians in the Indian way. Today the brand is seen as an Indian brand and not a brand from Finland.”

At the onset of the new millennium, this mobile giant brought out Nokia 3210, the first handset that was armed with a Hindi menu. Two years later, Nokia unfurled the lowcost Nokia 1100, created especially for India, which proved to be an instant hit. The brand communicated the launch of this phone with a commercial that had Rajpal Yadav and instantly clicked with the masses. The craze for this mobile phone reached dizzying heights and it has sold more than 200 million handsets in the last 4 years. With India being one of the fastest growing telecom markets in the world, Nokia’s special attention to the entry-level segment (volume driven) of the mobile market made great business sense.

After Nokia Hand Setyears of catering to the lower and middle segments, 2006 saw the launch of the high-end Nokia NSeries. The commercials to promote the N-Series rang the emotional tune. “We have always based our strategies on the end-user who can be either you or me. So the entire effort of the brand has been to simplify humane,” says Raja. The Nokia N72 series showed individuals switching to a better lifestyle, including looks which were more pleasing to the eye. Added to it was a tagline – ‘Move up to the Nokia N-series’ and conveyed the message loud and clear which was – move up the value chain.

While, Sony has recently roped in Hrithik Roshan and Motorola is doing well with Jr. Bachchan, Nokia has opted to go ambassadorless. Says Raja, “Brand ambassador’s have never been Nokia’s style. Nokia is an honest and sincere brand.” However, despite attractive offerings in every segment and establishing trust in the consumer, last year marked a slight fall for this giant.

The reasons were many; the success of Motorola’s RAZR and its aggressive marketing with Abhishek Bachchan on its side, the widely reported glitches in Nokia N-series, Sony’s Walkman series et al. “Whenever a handset maker has got it right, that company has achieved a lead over the others. And that has never been a static phenomenon! The growth of the Indian mobile market means that many handset vendors, and new entrants, have an opportunity to make an impact,” is what Jay Vikram Bakshi, Head of Enterprise Marketing, Nokia, has to say about the decline in the market share.

Brand Nokia might have lost some of its sheen and also some of its ‘connections’, yet, many of its patrons still swear by it as they say: (with their confidence intact in the brand) – after all it’s a Nokia!
