A Refreshing Opportunity

MANAGEMENT GURU

If sheer statistics were anything to go by, the tea industry of Vietnam is ‘sheer’ly going great guns! With the country producing no less than forty different varieties of the hot beverage, six varieties are exported to sixty countries in Asia, America and Europe. Amongst the eighteen bulk buyers, Pakistan, India, China & Russia have been instrumental in Vietnam posting tea export . gures of an estimated 100,000 tonnes worth $110 million. All driving the country to come 7th in terms of tea production and 6th in tea exports in the world (Food and Agriculture Organisation). Having said that, there is still a lot of untapped potential for this blooming sector, with the government building a national tea brand the “che viet” and looking to furrow into markets in UK, Germany, US, Australia, Thailand, Russia, China & Ukraine. With exports estimated to touch $1 billion by 2020, it’s surely a cuppa that one would love to dip into... ain’t it?!

Apple has always suffered from the 'late mover' dilemma... this time, it's no different

MANAGEMENT GURU

There is something strange about Apple. An innovative and creative mind mixed with a total misunderstanding of market trends, it seems. If we go back in time, when the Mac reigned supreme over the micro/personal computer world there was no contest between the very polished and intuitive interface of the Mac against the crude data center approach of the Microsoft products. And the people at Apple developed this arrogance that only market dominant companies can have: They were the IBM of the PC, and IBM was the Apple of the mainframe. Twenty two years later, Apple is still stuck in consumer products, and still completely obtuse when it comes to market evolution.

Fed up with US? Try OSCE...

OSCE’s ascension is the proof of NATO’s failure in ending conflicts

With the disintegration of Soviet Union in the early 1990s, and with Russia becoming more of an ally than a threat, the viability & existence of NATO was no doubt at stake. Yet, with it being clear that the dismantling of NATO would be equal to the loss of US influence and control on European issues, it was taken for granted that under no circumstances would NATO be diluted. But with the passage of time and absence of any major threat to Europe from the so-called hostile nation state and with the increasing hegemony of USA over international affairs, the rise and increasing prominence of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation from Europe (OSCE) has been a foregone conclusion. OSCE, a legacy of the Cold War era, today has around 56 countries as its members, which permeate the typical East-West European divide of the past.

Travelguru is on the cusp of being called just that, what with the potential of massive wealth and value creation

IIPM Best MBA INSTITUTE

No! They don’t make magic carpets (oh, how we wish someone could!), but they do promise to offer economic and value travel services. Struck by an idea in the year 2004 when he was working for a project in Harvard University for JetBlue, his former employer, Ashwin Damera scripted the beginnings of this emerging company – Travelguru – which has, within two years’ existence, grown into a business worth nearly Rs.60 crores. Riding on an accelerated growth curve, the company has only set unbelievable visionary targets for itself, and yes, with all their seat belts supremely fastened.

A neo age debut...

IIPM Best MBA INSTITUTE

...or a tough sporting debacle in store
Unlike countless Indian batsmen who become jittery at the sight of a typically overcast condition and a greenish top, Neo Sports entered a wicked wicket with seasoned players ESPN-Star Sports, Zee Sports and Ten Sports. And, the channel has so far made an eye-popping debut but will it survive among the gaints? Starting with Neo Sports, exclusively for cricket sure raised a few eyebrows, but Neo Sports Plus was soon shaped to broadcast domestic cricket in India.

Plus also bagged access to football tournaments like Copa Libertadores, Serie A, Bundesliga & Copa Sudamericana, along with badminton events: Thomas Cup, the Uber Cup, World Badminton Championships & Sudirman Cup.
